Yada Bell “Velma” (Nicholson) McHorse

Velma McHorse, 90, of San Saba, Texas, passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2003 in Llano, Texas. She was born May 8, 1912 in Claremont, Texas, the daughter of Thomas Elmer Nicholson and Roxie Bell Blevins. In January, 1930 Velma Nicholson and Robert Alier McHorse were maried in San Saba, where they made their home. Robert preceded her in death August 24, 1948. Velma was a homemaker and caregiver, having invested her life in the lives of many others. During the years of 1947 through 1951 she managed the Robert McHorse Freight and Express Business, fulfilling contracts with Santa Fe Railroad. She also was assistant manager and desk clerk for the San Saba Hotel/Ranchman's Tower Hotel. She belonged to the Naomi Sunday School Class at the Parkview Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, George McHorse and his wife Nell and Bill McHorse and his wife Daisy all of San Saba; daughter-in-law, Sandy McHorse of San Saba; grandchildren, George McHorse, Jr. and his wife Emma, Jack McHorse, Marsha Hardy and her husband Bob, Pam Sargent and her husband Andy, Todd McHorse and his wife Shelly, Lisa Wyatt, Lee McHorse, Kim Watson and her husband George, and Ken McHorse and his wife Sherri; great-grandchildren, Tricia McHorse, Tami Heagy and her husband Dave, Jackie McHorse, Lindsay McHorse, Larenda Wray and her husband Chad, Randell Holland, II, Regina Harbour, Angela Carroll and her husband Keith, Janell Sargent, Kaylie Sargent, Craig McHorse, Amanda McHorse, Blaine Bessent, Robby Haynes, Ross Watson, Roxie Watson, Cody McHorse and Kara McHorse; great-great-grandchildren, B.J. Harbour, Asa Harbour, Travis Hardy, Josh McElhiney, and Brian Carroll; and caregiver of many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Geneva McHorse; two sons, Larry McHorse and Kenneth McHorse; all brothers and sisters; all brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were grandsons: George McHorse, Jr., Jack McHorse, Todd McHorse, Lee McHorse, Ken McHorse, George Watson, and Bob Hardy.

Honorary Pallbearers were: Daniel Vaughn, Larry Alderson, Edward Ragsdale, Jimmy Eden, Larry Shivener, Harlen Barker, Paul Wilson, Clifford Wilson, Wade Lackey, Thomas Lanier, Keith Hibler, and Red Hooten.

The family requests that memorials be made to The Gideons, The San Saba County Volunteer EMS or to the Parkview Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Valma McHorse were held Sunday, January 26, 2003 at 3:00 P.M. at the Howell-Doran Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keith Robertson and Rev. Forrest McGregor officiating. Interment followed at the Terry Cemetery.
