Stephen Woodson Terry and Volumnia Jane Adams were married in Haywood County, Tennessee in 1847. Stephen's parents were John Terry and Sarah May each born about 1806. John was born in Georgia while Sarah was born in North Carolina. Stephen and Volumnia came to Texas about 1859 bringing with them their six children including Arretta Caroline who was the last child born in Tennesse and just one year old when they made the long journey. Amanda Volumnia was their first child to be born in Texas. Stephen and Volumnia were among the first settlers of San Saba County. On October 28, 1869 Stephen was appointed the tenth Sheriff of San Saba County. He was elected Sheriff on December 3 1869 and served until January 25, 1871. Stephen Woodson and his married children lived variously in Lampasas, San Saba, Pecan Grove and the Rough Creek area. Many if not most of these Terry families are buried in the Terry Cemetery in San Saba County, Texas.
The following pages include the genealogical record (births, marriages, deaths and family connections) for Stephen Woodson and Voluminia and six generations of their descendants. We have also included Stephen Woodson's parents, John and Sarah, and his siblings including his younger sister Sarah Ann who married Joshua Ragsdale. Joshua died in 1876 leaving Sarah with seven children to raise of which the youngest was four years old. With the help of her older brother, Stephen Woodson, Mary moved her family from Arkansas to San Saba County. The Ragsdale family also became well known and many Ragsdale descendents can still be found in the county.
