A.J. WALKER WEDDINGS

Settlers began to arrive in Alabama in the late 1700s and among them were Rev. James Walker of Pennsylvania and Robert Gamble both of whom founded large plantations and began their families. James Walker had ten children most of which were born in Alabama. Robert Gamble, a neighbor of James had nine children all of which were about the same age as James Walker's children. Alabama became a state in 1819 and the Gamble and Walker families found themselves now living in Shelby County. It was not uncommon in those days for the siblings of one family to marry siblings of a nearby family. Such was the case with the children of Robert and James. Andrew Walker, sixth child of James, married Jane Gamble and Aaron Gamble first child of Robert Gamble married Diadama Walker, the seventh child of James Walker. The children of these marriages are known as "double cousins" since they have the same set of grandparents.

About 1825 Andrew and Jane Walker and some of the Gambles left Shelby County and moved to adjoining Walker County where they lived near the Alfred G. Lane property. William, the third child of Andrew and Jane was born in Walker County about 1839. It was here that Andrew's son William met and courted Sarah Lane, daughter of Alfred G. Lane. We all know the story passed down by Sarah how her father decided to leave Alabama for Texas before the Civil War began in 1860. And that William Walker was distressed that his sweetheart was leaving and he rode his horse along side the Lane wagon begging Sarah to stay and marry him - which she did. William and Sarah were married in Walker County Alabama in 1860 and their son Alfred Jack Walker was born 3 March 1862. We have no photographs nor do we know the exact date of Sarah and William's marriage.

Of course we know that their only child Alfred Jack Walker married first Sarah Speir 3 April 1884 and second Ada Ruth Terry 1 May 1893. And while we have no photos of either of those marriages we do have individual photos taken near the time of those marriages and we are using those to introduce these Walker Wedding pages.

Alfred Jack Walker first married Sarah Speir 3 April 1884. After her death in 1891 he married Ada Ruth Terry 1 May 1893.
