The photographs below are those connected to the A.J. Walker family of Pecan Grove, San Saba County Texas and were taken more than 50 years ago.
Opal Pearle Estelle and Ruth - 1913
This picture had no names or date with it and it is a postcard that was never mailed with the return address W.T. Walker, Lometa Tex, St. Rte B. (Star Route B) which of course is Billie and Pearle's address. The bottom row is Opal and Pearle and the top row is Estelle and Ruth. Thanks to Deonna and Nell for the identification. The date is about 1913 and that would mean Pearle was age 23, Opal 2, Ruth 12 and Estelle is still a teen-ager at 19.
Zumwalt House Near the River - 1921
This picture is dated 1921, probably mid-summer. On the back of the original there were twelve persons listed from left to right. They are: Jimmy, Maude Walker, Ernest Pierce, Linda (Lane), Estelle Pierce holding baby Joe Pierce who was born on Christmas Day 1920, Terry Walker, Lou (Lane) Patton, Velma (Edwards) Walker, Gladys Patton, Winnie, and Alfred Walker Jr. I have confirmed identities and relationships of all but Jimmy. Jack Walker III sent me this picture with names on the back and he believed that Jimmy and Winnie are Linda's children. However Winnie, born in 1899, is the daughter of Jefferson D. Lane. Jefferson is the second child in Alfred G. Lane's second marriage and was born two years after Lou Lane. Linda Lane is the third child and was born in 1865. The house in this picture is the Zumwalt House and was located near the river. Alfred and Velma were living in this house having been married a little over a year. Jack was born here in August 1921 and the house washed away in the spring flood of 1922. A.J. Walker and his mother Sarah bought the Pecan Grove property just before Christmas in 1899 from the Zumwalt couple.
Lou (Aunt Lou)(Lane) Patton and Linda Lane are sisters, and daughters of Alfred G. Lane's second marriage and therefore they are half-sisters to Sarah (Lane) Walker, Juda Priscilla (Lane) Brown and Simon B. Lane. Gladys Patton, age 11 in this picture, is the only daughter of Mark and Lou (Lane) Patton.
Sara Ann Mariah Lane - About 1921
This is a picture of A.J. Walker's mother, born 1835 in Alabama. It was taken about 1921. Simon B. Lane (see next picture) was a younger brother to Sarah. After A.J. Walker's wife died in 1901 Sarah, who was now 65 years old, played a big part in raising the five Walker children. Sarah was one of Alfred G. Lane's 19 children. Some of her siblings remained in Alabama after Alfred G. moved to Texas just before the Civil War. Judah Priscilla, a younger sister, and Simon came with Alfred G. while Sarah and baby Jackie came to Texas after the Civil War. Eight of Sarah's half-siblings were born in Lampasas County. Sarah was 88 when she died in 1923.
Simon and Morgan Lane - 1923 California
This picture is of Simon B. Lane, born 1849, and his wife Morgan Henriettta (Lewis) Lane, taken in their home in El Monte California, in which they appear to be celebrating an anniversary. Their 50th wedding anniversary was in 1923 and it seems likely that this is a celebration of that event. If so then Simon would be 73 in the photo and Morgan 67. We know from the El Paso County census that Simon was living in El Paso in 1920 and the following year he moved to California. He kept in touch with Mr. Walker and Billie and Pearle. In 1927 he wrote a letter to Billie and Pearle Walker from El Monte California in which he spoke of his family and his chicken farm business. He died in El Monte in 1933 at age 83 and Morgan died one year later. Simon sent the Walker's a bag of California walnuts every Christmas.

A.J. Walker Sr. and one of his Herefords - 1940s
This picture is a 1940s photo of A.J. Walker Sr. with one of his Hereford cows and is very typical of his appearance as I knew him in the 1930's and 40s. He rarely wore a tie and usually kept the top button of his shirt fastened. His "ten gallon" Texas style hat was always fully rounded at the top.
